Trevarefabrikken and Lofoten Film Club launch their new film series in Vågan with Fantastic Mr. Fox as one of three classic films screening at Trevarefabrikken this spring.

Wes Anderson is rightly regarded as one of contemporary cinema’s auteurs — a director whose films read like stylized short stories, populated by exaggerated characters, dry wit, and meticulously measured understatement. With Fantastic Mr. Fox, Anderson proves equally at home in live-action and animation, showing that stop-motion animals can carry as much existential weight as human characters. Crafted with animated puppets, the film earned Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.

The voice cast is stellar — including Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Adrien Brody, and Bill Murray — and while the film adapts Roald Dahl’s beloved tale, Anderson applies his own artistic liberties. The result is unmistakably Anderson: a story centered on a somewhat dysfunctional fox family, which in this universe reads less like pathology and more like a mark of vitality.

Fantastic Mr. Fox follows the restless titular fox, whose kleptomaniac tendencies and compulsive need to prove himself, land him and his clan in the crosshairs of a trio of vengeful farmers. What follows is a clever, bittersweet rescue mission in which Mr. Fox must reckon with his identity while trying to save his family and community.
