In our collaboration with Trevarefabrikken, Lofoten Filmklubb presents the classic Mulholland Drive by the legendary David Lynch. Although Lynch was already an established and respected filmmaker at the time of this release, Mulholland Drive is the work that truly elevated him to mythic status — a filmic realm where logic is optional and dreams often trump reality. The movie renewed and amplified interest in Lynch’s singular universe, and stands as one of the last features he directed.
This screening at Trevarefabrikken is also an occasion to remember David Lynch, who passed away a year ago. Lynch helped shape the surreal and imaginative language of modern cinema, achieving something few directors do: films that are uncompromising yet found an audience beyond critics. His work on Twin Peaks is widely regarded as a prescient example of how television could evolve into a medium as serious and ambitious as film.
So what kind of film is Mulholland Drive? It’s a dark, peculiar, and wonderfully strange affair. The story opens with a woman’s traffic collision in a limousine — hardly a promising start for clear thinking. She loses her memory, and what follows behaves more like a dream than a conventional narrative: fragmented, illogical, and at times unsettling. The plot is full of detours and parallel threads, leaving the puzzle for the audience to assemble — without instructions and with a few likely missing pieces. Yet Lynch somehow stitched this together into a film that critics and audiences alike have embraced as a modern classic.
Drop by Trevarefabrikken to see Mulholland Drive. We can’t promise you’ll understand everything, but we can almost guarantee it will linger in your mind long after the credits roll. Unless, of course, you collide — with a parallel world.
